Girls’ Basketball Makes It to Playoffs

By Emily Ye

Last year, the Bay Farm girls’ basketball team fought their way to second place in the league with a team full of 8th graders. Hoping to follow in their footsteps, 11 girls were chosen to be on this year’s 2018-19 team. Veterans from last year included Jenna Kwong, Andrea Chan, Katie Ha, and Artemesia Chugarlarf, all 8th graders who played all three years at Bay Farm. Nikita Bulusu was also a veteran, but in 7th grade.

The girls’ basketball team for the 2018-19 season was picked by this year’s coaches, Sam Ng and Janine Hara. Coach Sam Ng was chosen for the job because he’s led multiple teams to the Championship game and at least one to victory. Janine Hara volunteered to help coach her daughter Jenna Kwong’s last middle school year of basketball. Our season this year ended at the playoffs with a loss to ACLC of 26-19.

“We’re a young team, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Lots of us were playing for the first time, and that’s OK,” coach Sam Ng said.

Players had lots of positive things to say about the season. Katy Fletcher, a 6th grader, said, “It was good, I liked it.”

Many 6th and 7th graders said that they will most likely play in the 2019-2020 season, although many 8th graders are unsure of whether or not they will be playing in high school.

Thanks for reading! But, we aren’t done yet. As a special part of this article I asked some of the team members if they had anything to say to the 8th grade players headed off to high school. Here’s what they had to say:

“Thanks for playing for us and always trying your best!” 7th grader Camilla Kristensen said.

“Good job playing!” 6th grader Katy Fletcher said.

And from the rest of the team, “Thanks for always playing your hardest in our games, no matter the circumstance. You guys carried the team on your shoulders, making all the shots (Jenna), setting offensive plays (Andrea), being supportive (Artemesia), and helping us younger and more inexperienced players (Katie).”

Dear graduating 8th graders, from all of us, thanks for playing:

Jenna Kwong

Andrea Chan

Artemesia Chugarlarf

Katie Ha

{I hope you enjoyed my little article/thank you memo about the girls’ basketball season. This year’s players recommend that you only play if you actually want to, not for the sweatshirt, and to have fun and enjoy yourself. Well, till next time!}
