10 Gaming Rumors to Look Out For

By staff writer Brenden Dalipe
After the release of The Last Guardian (Finally! After 6 whole years in the development underworld, it’s no longer a rumor! Plus, it’s not a let down like Mighty No. 9 or Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts!), I’ve been wondering about some other video games that should be out now, but we have no information on. Sequels to some critically acclaimed games have been asked for by countless fans, and they sometimes got a part of what they asked for, with leaked info or dropped trailers (or are they dropped?). I still have hope for these rumors, and hopefully you do too.
10: Asphalt 9 (mobile only)
The latest Asphalt games, Asphalt Xtreme and Asphalt 8: Airborne have been great additions to the franchise… but they weren’t enough. We fans of high-octane, arcade action, supersonic speed, energetic music, and extreme competition and customization needed more! So, people everywhere spread rumors on a new sequel! There was even a trailer… on April 1, 2016. You see where this is going, right? The trailer wasn’t released at a bad time, it was really just an April Fool’s joke. However, after the success of the previous games (most of them), I still see a bright future for one of Gameloft’s best franchises.
9: Test Drive Unlimited 3 (a.k.a. TDU3)
After the release of the first two Test Drive games, I learned that Eden, some of the people who created these games, had apparently closed down and gone bankrupt! However, they had recently released Gear.Club, a mobile racing game where you raced in modern cars and built your garage. They were done with the series, but BigBenStudios has bought the rights and is seemingly working on a third game on the series!
8: Super Mario RPG Sequel (unnamed)
The first Super Mario RPG was released way back in the SNES era, and it was a hidden gem! Ubisoft noticed how well the game did, and apparently has recently decided to partner with Nintendo to create a sequel on the upcoming Nintendo Switch… with the Rabbids?! Named Super Mario RPG: Invasion of the Rabbids, the sequel will apparently release on the launch of the Switch. I don’t feel great with the Rabbids literally invading the Mario universe, but it’s Mario, right?!
7: The Elder Scrolls 6
The Elder Scrolls 5 was very successful, selling over 20 million copies, so it really wouldn’t make sense to not create a sequel – as Digital Spy states, “Money demands it exists.” Although nothing official has released about this sequel, some posts on social media, the Internet, and even facts point to an Elder Scrolls 6! Even the Vice President of the creators of the Elder Scrolls series, Bethesda, stated on Twitter, “fyi, the elder scrolls vi isn’t in development. we simply said we would make it eventually. [We] don’t want people to be misled.” There’s almost no denying there’s going to be a sequel!
6: Spider-Man (PS4 only)
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been rebooted, apparently the new Spider-Man game will have nothing to do with that, or even the new Spider-Man movie! However, hopes are down because of the attempts made before to revive Spider-Man, like his movies, the games, and now the new movie! Is this new game really going to work? Well, Bill Rosemann, one of the leaders of the studio working on the game, stated, “I think we’ve been inspired by all the different mediums that Marvel has, whether it’s film, animation, live-action, comic books, even t-shirts. So we’re looking at everything and we’re blending it all together. But it’s standalone; all new story, all new world.” We’ll just have to see, though.
5: Need for Speed Underground 3
After what we thought was Need for Speed Underground 3 (which was really just a reboot), we needed an actual sequel. We’ve been waiting for MORE THAN 12 YEARS! THAT’S MORE THAN FINAL FANTASY XV OR THE LAST GUARDIAN! We need a Need for Speed that actually captures the true essence of street racing, upgrading, and customization, all with a really fun open world, not some place where you just drive! We need an open world that was just waiting to be played around with!
4: Destiny 2
Recently, a post on Reddit described the details of the next game, including running at 60 frames per second, 3 new subclasses, and The Speaker, a supporting character in the original, being part of the main storyline. The game will apparently release in the first quarter of 2018. However, as I read up on some articles about this post to refresh myself, I learned that consoles can’t run at 60 frames per second (thanks to Paul Tassi, the writer of one of the articles in Forbes). So, because that fact was disproved, can we really trust this post?! We’ll need to wait until 2018, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
3: Guardians of the Galaxy: a Telltale Series
They’ve done Batman. They’ve done Minecraft. They’ve done The Walking Dead! Now, they’re working on a Marvel Telltale series instead of a DC! Telltale was able to successfully revive Batman after his horrible movies (you’re going to need to take a look at the Batman Telltale series, Batman v Superman – that’s how you do something with Batman on it), but can they make Guardians of the Galaxy better? There were some really amazing plot twists in the Batman series, so can they do the same here, if they really make a Guardians of the Galaxy Telltale series!
2: Batman: Arkham Sequel (unnamed) (PS4 only)
After the success of the first two Batman: Arkham games, Arkham Asylum and Arkham City (and the absolute disappointment of Arkham Knight), people needed more. They didn’t need Arkham Knight! Fortunately, some leaked footage showed a new Batman: Arkham game in early development! The footage is gone now (it’s deleted), but that footage has been engraved our minds, giving us hope for Warner Bros Montreal’s new game (if they make a new one), as well as something said in the footage – “You create your own avatar, grow it out, with tiers of rewards… many characters to choose… co-op-action… Borderlands-esque..” Apparently a co-op feature as well as create-a-character will be featured in this new Arkham game! Although Warner Bros has not officially said anything about this game yet, this practically proves there will be a second Arkham game by them (Warner Bros have created one Arkham game, while Rocksteady created the other three)!
1: Half-Life: Episode 3
You knew this was coming, didn’t you? Half-Life 2 left us off with a serious cliffhanger… and that was in 2004. For a whole 12 years as of January 2017, we’ve been watching television, not for the shows, but for a possible reveal trailer or ad for Half-Life: Episode 3 – as long as we’ve been waiting for Underground 3! Half-Life 2 was one of the best (if not the best) first person shooters to date, with wonderful AI (artificial intelligence), story, cliffhanger, and so much more! According to a Valve (the company who created the Half-Life games) insider, Half-Life 3 isn’t coming anytime soon, and to a few news sites, that all the “Half-Life 3 confirmed” jokes made, it killed off a potential sequel. With all the fake news and misleading advertisements for video games last year, however (No Man’s Sky, for instance), should we really believe that? I don’t. Valve, don’t leave us with a cliffhanger ending like Half-Life 2’s. GIVE US HALF-LIFE 3…. Please?
After listing these rumors of sequels and more, I’m really hoping these games will appear on shelves sometime soon! In the meantime, we’ve already got some amazing games to have a great time with that released in 2016! Why don’t you check my list on the top 10 games of 2016? Maybe while you’re reading, some new info on these games will surface.
