On Tuesday, Oct. 27, Bay Farm School hosted the Coast Guard in what has become an annual event.

It was the largest and most exciting so far. In past years, Coast Guard officers and personnel came out for an hour or two in the morning to escort many of the classrooms to a water rescue demonstration (involving a boat, a helicopter, a drowning dummy and rescue personnel) a couple of blocks away from the school and answer questions in some of the classes.

This year, however, organizer Commander Samson Stevens, a Bay Farm parent, added a K-9 unit demonstration; two Coast Guard boats were driven to the school and their teams gave presentations to the students, who were also allowed to climb into the boats and look around; and perhaps most exciting of all, a Coast Guard helicopter was landed next door at Tillman Park, where personnel again gave a demonstration, answered questions, and allowed students to climb inside.
