Girls Basketball heads into playoffs at #1

By staff writer Peter Brady
The Lady Dolphins — last year’s league champions — are again the best team in the Alameda district playoffs. They have topped all teams in the city, losing only once, to Lincoln Middle School.
The BFMS girls basketball team finished off their regular season on Feb. 20 against ACLC/NEA (50-18) at the top of Division II with a 7-1 record. Both Emily Lau and Sophie Nilsson netted 13 points, and seven other girls contributed greatly in scoring, Coach Moira Hester said.
The team had previously beaten Lincoln in a strong 45-23 win with contributions from all team members.
At Tuesday night’s playoff game against ACLC/NEA, the Dolphins won 35-19. Many players contributed to scoring and rebounding including Lau, Nilsson, Waverley Achacoso (who scored her personal best with 8 points), Sarah Leong, and Iwalani Cruz. The team’s defense was solid especially in the last quarter, including two steals by Jamie Pak and a great blocked shot by Fana Binyam on a fast break.
The team will play in the championship game this Friday for the second year in a row. The team will play the winner of Thursday’s playoff game between the Encinal Junior Jets and Lincoln Middle School, at 4 p.m. at the Alameda Point Navy Base (1101 W. Redline).
Coach Hester has coached the Bay Farm team in its first two years of formation, and led it to victory both years. It has been remarkable seeing the teamwork and effort by every player.
